Visiting Katsuji Wakisaka' studio

During my trip to Japan, I had the great opportunity to visit Mr. Katsuji Wakisaka at his studio. He was the first Japanese designer to work for Marimekko (in Finland). He came back to Japan over 20 years ago and now he designs all textiles used for SOU・SOU products. He is very prolific and produces new designs every month.

先日日本に帰国した際に、SOU・SOUのテキスタイルデザイナー、脇坂克二さんのスタジオ兼ご自宅にお邪魔できるという素晴らしい機会にめぐまれました！脇坂さんはフィンランドのマリメッコ社初の日本人デザイナーとして活躍され、約２０年前に日本に帰国された後、SOU・SOUのテキスタイルデザインを手がけていらっしゃいます。
このスタジオで毎月新しいテキスタイルデザインが生み出されています。



Mr. Wakisaka starts his day painting on blank postcards. He paints patterns inspired by plants he sees on his walks and posts them to his wife every day. (Lucky wife!) Some days he finishes painting just within five minutes, on other days it takes hours to finish. He's been sticking to this ritual for 10 years and now and has made more than 10,000 postcards.

脇坂さんの１日はポストカードに絵を描くことから始まります。毎日散歩の途中で見つけた植物などにインスピレーションを受けたパターンをポストカードに描き、奥様宛に投稿されているのです。（ラッキーな奥様ですね！）
５分で描き終わることもあれば、数時間かかることもあるそうです。脇坂さんはこの習慣を１０年以上も続けてらっしゃるということで、描かれたポストカードは１万枚以上になるとか。


Many of the SOU・SOU textile designs are from these postcards. You can see some familiar patterns (like "masu square") in this postcard collection.

SOU・SOUのテキスタイルデザインの多くは、このポストカードから来ています。SOU・SOUの商品でおなじみの柄がこのポストカードの中に見られます。


Here is his collection of ceramic airplanes. So cute!

セラミックで作られた飛行機のオブジェが可愛いです！


He showed me the process he paints. Paying close attention to balance, he painted a big bold flower, the motif often used in SOU・SOU textiles. He said he never gets tired of drawing flowers.

絵を描いているところを見せて頂きました。バランスに気をつかいながら、大胆な花柄を描いていきます。
花柄はSOU・SOUのテキスタイルのモチーフによく使われています。お花を描くのは飽きないのだそう。


His studio was a very comfortable space. Here are more ceramic objects he painted, next to a display of plant seeds and dried flowers that inspire him.

スタジオはとても居心地のいいスペースでした。陶器で作られたという小さなオブジェや、ドライフラワーや
植物の実が飾ってありました。


Around his studio, maple trees started to turn red. It was very pretty!

脇坂さんのスタジオの周辺では、楓の紅葉がはじまっていました。


He must have gotten inspiration for this textile from these trees. It was amazing
experience to see the whole process of his design!

多分、この柄のインスピレーションになったのでしょうね。とても素晴らしい経験になりました!

Meet SOU・SOU Mom!

Meet Chinatsu, (we share the same name) the store manager of Warabegi/SOU・SOU Kids Clothing store (and she also sometimes design them, too) and her youngest son, Hanabusa, only nine months old!
Chinatsu is the mother of three kids and she raised all of them while working at SOU・SOU, helping customers and carrying her baby on her back! What a tough mom!
It's amazing she never ever forgets to smile even though she must be super tired carrying a baby all the time.

本日ご紹介するのはSOU・SOUわらべぎのスタッフ、ちなつさん（私と同じ名前です!）と９ヶ月になる息子さん、はなぶさ君です。ちなつさんは３人のお子さんのお母さんで、３人ともSOU・SOUの店舗で働きながら育てられたというとってもタフなお母さんです。赤ちゃんを背負って大変そうなのにも関わらず、いつも笑顔をたやさず優しく接客してくださいます。



Her daughter Hatsune and Haruka, also help SOU・SOU store as the models.
Growing up already wearing SOU・SOU baby clothing, they are the perfect models!

ちなつさんのお嬢さん、はつねちゃんとはるかちゃんは、SOU・SOUの子供服のモデルもしています。
SOU・SOUの子供服を着て育っているせいか、着こなしもばっちり。


Here's Mr.Tokuji, the father of three kids. He also manages SOU・SOU Men's clothing
section and also works as a model for the online store.
これが３人のお子さんのお父さんの徳治さんです。傾衣の店長さんでもあり、オンラインストアでモデルもされていらっしゃいます。


Hanabusa is used to being surrounded by customers, because even though so many people were peeking at his face, he was asleep the entire time.
Looking forwards to see him working at SOU・SOU Store soon!
はなぶさ君はとても人慣れしているようで、お客様やスタッフに囲まれているにもかかわらずスヤスヤ熟睡していました。早く大きくなってSOU・SOUの店舗で働く様子をみてみたいものです。

Trip to SOU・SOU Kyoto!

I just came back from a two week trip to Japan! I brought back a lot of goodies (including new products for the holiday season). I had a great time visiting the Japanese SOU・SOU stores, and I wanted to share my experience with all of you:
２週間弱、久々に日本に里帰りしてきました！ホリデーシーズンに向けて色々と新商品を持って帰ってきたり、
日本のSOU・SOU京都店を訪ねたりしてとても楽しかったです！今回は京都のSOU・SOU本店をご紹介します。


Here's the SOU・SOU flagship store in Kyoto (around the Kawaramachi-station area). There is a tabi-shoes store on the first floor, Le Coq Sportif bicycle store on the 2nd floor, and Kei-i (men's clothing) in the basement level. The whole building is full of fun SOU・SOU products and you can coordinate a whole outfit!
これが京都の阪急・河原町駅付近のSOU・SOU本店になります。１階が足袋店、２階がサイクリングウェアを取り扱うSOU・SOU Le Coq Sportif、地下に紳士服の傾衣があります。ビル全体にSOU・SOUの楽しい商品がいっぱいあふれていて、上から下まで全身SOU・SOUでコーディネートできてしまいます！

これが紳士服の傾衣の中の様子です。木村英輝によって描かれた壁画がかっこいいです。

メインのビルの向かいにある和服店舗、着衣。


Shitsurai, SOU・SOU tearoom and furniture/textile show room.
しつらい。SOU・SOUのオーダー家具とテキスタイルのお店です。お茶と和菓子もいただけます。


Here you can enjoy sweets inspired by SOU・SOU textiles (they change the design every month to represent seasonal changes) with a good cup of green tea. They are almost too beautiful to eat (I ate them all anyways, and it was DELICIOUS too)!
ここではSOU・SOUのテキスタイルにインスパイアされた和菓子とお抹茶がいただけます。あまりに綺麗すぎて食べるのがもったいないほど。（と言いつつ全部食べてしまいましたが。。。とてもおいしかったです）


This is Ise Momen, the store dedicated to accessories (scarf, tenugui towel, etc.) made of Ise Cotton.
ここは伊勢木綿。伊勢木綿製の小物（くびまきや手ぬぐいなど）を取り扱うお店です。


This is my favorite one: Warabegi, kids' clothing store. Many of the SOU・SOU adult
shoes and clothing come in mini sizes, so you can match with your kids too!
そして、ここが子供服のわらべぎ。SOU・SOUの大人服のほとんどが子供用のミニサイズでも作られているので、お子様とペアルックも可能なのです！

Madame Sadayakko

I recently finished reading Lesley Downer's Madame Sadayakko: The Geisha Who Bewitched the West. The book tells the true story of a geisha named Yakko (1871-1946) who gave up her promising career to become an actress and brought the craze for all things Japanese to the West.
最近Lesley Downer著”マダム・サダヤッコ：西洋を魅了した芸者”を読み終わりました。
この本は実在した芸者サダヤッコ（1871~1946)が女優になる夢を捨て芸者になり、西洋に日本ブームを起こした実話が書かれています。

Born into a good family that had fallen upon bad times, Yakko was adopted into a geisha house as a child and quickly rose up to become Japan's most popular geisha by her mid-teens. Yakko married actor Otojiro and ended her career as a geisha. Together with their acting troupe, Yakko and Otojiro began a rocky journey to revolutionize Japanese theater. Plagued by poverty, illness, racism, and classicism, the group traveled America and Europe and broke through to wide acclaim. Yakko became a muse to artists, musicians, and actors and made proper Victorian women ditch their lace gowns for western "kimonos." At home, however, success was far more fleeting.
不況時に没落した良家に生まれたヤッコは芸者置屋に引き取られ、１０代半ばには日本で一番人気の芸者にまで昇りつめました。
ヤッコは俳優の音次郎と結婚し芸者を引退しました。彼らは劇団グループと一緒に、日本の劇を改革するための旅に出ます。貧困や病気、人種差別や階級社会の問題にさらされながら劇団はアメリカ、ヨーロッパを廻り、さらに広い支持を得ることとなります。ヤッコは多くの芸術家や音楽家、俳優たちのミューズとなり、優雅なヴィクトリアン時代の女性たちは彼女の影響でレースのガウンの代わりに西洋風の”キモノ”を着るようになりました。
しかし故郷の日本での成功ははかないものでした。
Though the book often reads like a textbook, this is the only comprehensive biography of Yakko and includes several pages of rare photos. It is an excellent resource.
本は少し教科書ぽいですが、唯一のヤッコの人生の完全な伝記です。入手しがたい写真も数ページあり、ヤッコの人生を知るには素晴らしい資料です。

A year in Japan

Currently I am reading "A Year In Japan", the illustrated travelogue by Kate Williamson, who spent a year in Kyoto.
Her watercolor illustrations of Japanese food, textiles and the landscapes of Kyoto are very colorful and playful.
Her keen eye to detail reminded me the beauty of everyday life in Japan which I wasn't paying much attention to when I was there: Beautiful wagashi (Japanese sweets), the colorful pattened socks, cherry blossom viewing, and tasty shaved ice with sweetened soy beans!
This is a great book for anyone who's interested in japanese culture and good design!

今、ケイト・ウィリアムソンさん著の旅行日記「日本の一年」を読んでいます。ケイトさんは京都で一年を過ごしました。
日本食やテキスタイル、京都の風景などが色彩豊かで遊び心のある水彩のイラストで綴られています。
彼女の細部に至る視線は、日本にいた時には気づかなかった日本での生活の美に気づかせてくれます。和菓子の美しさ、カラフルな靴下、お花見、そしておいしい小豆金時など。
