Textile Design 4: Tadasu Forest

Today's featured textile design is "Tadasu Forest",the popular pattern used for our Ise Cotton Scarf.
Here's the note from the designer, Wakisaka.

The Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto is preserved as a world heritage site. Tadasu Forest,which is part of the shrine, is full of native tall trees which make it a very relaxing space. Here, I tried to express the different shades of leaves and shapes by using detailed gingham and plaid patterns to achieve the richness of color of the forest.

原生林の鎮守の森。
木々がそびえ立っていて、気持ちのいい空間が広がっている。
細かい市松や格子柄を使って、葉の濃淡や形の微妙な変化を表現し、豊かで多彩な森の感じが出せればと願った。

Today's customer is Misaki, who was the MC at the screening event for the new anime film "The Garden of Sinners" at VIZ Cinema. She came to pick up a scarf that would go well with her favorite SOU SOU tabi shoes, so she chose the Dan Dan pattern in turquoise. With these bold designs I'm sure she had no trouble keeping everyone's attention!

Hello,

This is Bryna (Chinatsu's helper) typing...

You won't see me around anymore because I'm moving back to Portland, Oregon! I have really enjoyed my time at SOU SOU (and New People The Store), and I'm sad to leave such wonderful co-workers and customers. Hopefully I will be back for a visit in the not too distant future!

Maggie picked up the long sashiko boots with Paper stream pattern. Alex was between the black short tabi boots and the burgundy boots, but he decided to take the black one in the end to match his t shirt.

Valentine's Day

For Valentine's Day dinner, my love and I headed to Zazie, a small french bistro restaurant located in San Francisco's Cole Valley district.
今年のバレンタインデーは彼女とコール・バリー地区にあるフランス料理店のZAZIEに行ってきました。



For dinner, we had an entree of lobster Ravioli surrounded by Tiger Prawns, with wilted arugula and white wine, topped with a finish of shaved manchego cheese, and another entree of grilled mascarpone polenta hearts with wild mushrooms, wilted spinach, gorgonzola, and spicy thomato-chevre sauce. Delish!
クルマ海老とアギュレラに包まれたロブスター入りのラビオリ、マンチェゴチーズがかかっています。
もう一品はマッシュルーム、ほうれん草とゴルゴンゾーラチーズ、そしてトマトとヤギのチーズのソースがかかった
ポレンタのグリル焼き。おいしいかったです！


We finished off the evening with a dessert called "Opposites Attract", consisting of one petit pot de creme au chocolat topped with strawberries and one petit creme brulee with a hard toffee shell on top, with two hard toffee heart outlines. Look at the pictures and enjoy the visual feast.

そして最後は”Opposites Attract"（正反対同士は惹きあう）という名前のデザートを。苺が着いた小さいクレームデゥショコラと、コーヒー味のシェルがついた小さいクリームビリュレのセットにハート型のトフィーがのっています。目のごちそうです。

本日ご紹介するデザインは「ちぎれ雲」です。ちぎれ雲は足袋下やジバン、もんぺ等SOU・SOUの商品に数多く使われているデザインです。以下、脇坂さんからのコメントになります。

White clouds floating in the blue sky, looking as if they are just painted with a quick brush stroke. Looking up at the clear sky makes my concerns and worries seem small.
Nature always helps release us.

青い空に筆でさっさっと描いたような白い雲が並んでいる。
澄んだその空を見上げていると、今自分が感じている悩みや考えていることが、何となくちっぽけなことかと思えてくる。
自然はいつも僕たちを解放してくれる。

Trouble Coffee

There are so many coffee roasters opening up in San Francisco lately, it's hard to pick just one favorite spot. But I think I found the ultimate place (finally)!
It's called Trouble Coffee and is located in the Sunset district by the beach.
最近、サンフランシスコで自家焙煎のコーヒーを出すカフェが続々とできている中、どれか一つを選ぶのはなかなか難しいのですが、やっとサンフランシスコで一番おいしいと思えるコーヒーに出会いました。
サンセット地区にあるトラブル・コーヒーです！



Mmmm... Their Latte is always so good!! It's very strong without being too bitter; it reminds me of the coffee I had at Kyoto. I didn't have a chance to take a pic, but if you go, you have to try their famous cinnamon toast! Yummy! It's worth the trip all the way from the Mission district!
ここのおすすめはラテ。強いのに苦みがなく、少し京都のコーヒーを思い出させてくれます。
写真を撮リ忘れてしまいましたが、ここに着たらトラブルコーヒー名物のシナモントーストを試すのもお忘れなく！
ミッションからわざわざ電車に乗って来るだけの価値はあります！

Today's customer is Olivia, who picked up the white short tabi boots. She had a hard time choosing between burgundy and white, but decided on white. I think it goes best with her outfit; I love her Jack hat with her mask! This is such a statement boot, I'm sure you can wear it with your favorite cosplay costume!

Textile Design 2: Snow Bunny

Happy Chinese New Year Everyone! Today's featured textile is "Snow Bunny", specially designed for the year of the Rabbit. We have the tenugui towel with this super cute pattern!

今日ご紹介するテキスタイルデザインはうさぎ年にちなんで”雪うさぎ”です。


Here's the designer's note from Katsuji Wakisaka...

As children, we used to grab and form snow into bunnies (and used the red fruits of Nandina for eyes and green leaves for ears). In the falling snow, hundreds of snow bunnies are waiting for something in silence, maybe waiting for the beginning of Spring. I hope the year of the rabbit will be a great year for everyone!

雪をかためてうさぎの形をつくり、南天の赤い実を目に、緑の葉を耳にして、子供達が遊んだ雪うさぎ。
降りしきる雪の中、何頭もの雪うさぎが並んで何かを待っている。それは暖かな春のおとずれだろうか。
うさぎ年が皆様にとって良いお年であります様に！
