Today's customer is Naoya and Yoshie. Naoya got the burgundy tabi boots a couple months ago, and he liked it so much, this time he brought his girlfriend so she can try. Yoshie got a pair of black short tabi boots.
I love seeing the couple wear the tabi shoes together!

Textile Design 7: Japanese Alphabet

Today's featured textile design is "Iro ha niohedo"("japanese alphabet"),
used for our kids shoes, business card case, and tenugui towel.

To create textile design using Japanese alphabets may be against popular trend. We rarely see any textile design with Japanese alphabets. But creating new designs using these materials is big role for me now.
日本語のテキスタイルデザインを作るというのは、時代性から言うと難しいものかもしれない。現にほとんど見かけない。しかし、この“素材”を作ってデザインするという事は、今の僕の大きな役割でもある。

It took long time for her decide if she should get the simple black sashiko one or this tabi shoes with Persimmon dye denim(they really use the natural persimmon juice to dye this fabric!) But she chose the later one. They looks great with her cute patterned leggings!

Radish Flower Pattern

Today's customer is James, visiting from UK.
He tried on a couple different tabi shoes, but in the end he decided to take the Radish Flower patterned one.
Many guys tend to avoid the patterned shoes, but here James is showing that men can also pull off the patterned shoes, combined with the right outfit.

何足も試し履きしていただき、最初は「やっぱり黒があわせやすくていいかな。。」と
黒のさしこと迷っていらっしゃいましたが、最終的にはすずしろ柄の先丸地下足袋をお買い上げになりました。柄について、「すずしろ＝大根の花」という説明をしたところ、とても興味を持っていただいたようです。写真を撮られることにとってもテレながらもモデルをしていただきました！
男性のお客様には花柄は敬遠されがちなのですが、ジェームス様のように上手にコーディネート頂くと逆にお洒落度がアップするような気がします。個人的にはもっと男性に柄もの地下足袋をどんどん履いてほしいな！と思います。

Textile Design 5: Chrysanthemum Burst

Today's featured textile is "Chrysanthemum Burst"very popular pattern used for our Ise-cotton Scarf.

For me, Chrysanthemum is an easy motif to design with. You can add as many petals as you want, so I kept adding them and adjusted the balance and rhythm of the petals to create "Kiku Zukushi"
I think the balance and rhythm is a very important element of textile design.


僕にとって菊というのはデザインしやすいものだ。
花びらをどれだけでも増やしていけるから、どんどん描き込んでいって
あとでバランスとかリズムをよくしていったのが“菊づくし”。
このバランスとリズムというものがテキスタイルデザインにはとても大事だと思う。

Twin Siter in SOU・SOU Shoes!

Today's customers are Valerie and Veronica, twin sisters! Veronica got her first pair of tabi shoes and she loved it so much she came back to us to get another pair.
She was telling me her twin sister loved it too, and then her sister Valerie suddenly showed up at the store!! Wow, coincidence huh? Maybe they telepathically communicated with each other!
Valerie got the Dan Dan pattern round-toe shoes.
